Bone Density Screening

Bone density screening FloridaWhile bone loss is a natural part of the aging process, a more serious condition called osteoporosis results in bones becoming more fragile.

Screening for osteoporosis is the first step to prevention. If discovered early, life style changes and medications can help to promote increased bone mineral density.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include:

  • Strong family history of osteoporosis
  • Thin, small frame
  • Caucasian or Asian
  • Females, especially those who are postmenopausal
  • Males who have low testosterone levels
    • Use of steroids or medication for convulsions
    • Heavy smoker
    • Heavy use of caffeine or alcohol
    • Insufficient exercise, calcium, or vitamin D

Bone density screening is extremely safe, painless, and takes less than 20 minutes.

The patient lies on a table and relaxes during the procedure while a mechanical arm-like device passes over the body without touching it.

There is no advance preparation for the test, and the patient may resume normal activities immediately after the test.
